i've been in colorguard for five years now, but i've just recently obtained some of the biggest, nastiest bruises that i've ever gotten. I've iced and elevated, but i wanted to know if there were any "home remedys" to help, especially with the swelling. i would like to avoid any surgery! so share your wisdom, thanks =)

Using ice the first 24 hours is correct then change to warm moist soaks. A dish towel wet with hot tap water should be sufficient. The moist warmth will expand the blood vessels and help clear out the bruise faster.
It is not going to be an instant thing but it will help

Pressure! Bruises are caused when there is trauma to an area and the blood vessels burst, causing blood to spill out under the skin. This is what causes the bluish color. As the blood ages and eventually disintegrates, the bruise changes color ... this is why older bruises sometimes look green and yellow. When you have an injury that you feel is going to bruise, put alot of pressure on it. This will prevent some of the bleeding and they won't look so bad.

I don't see any reason why you'd have to have surgery for bruises. They'll go away eventually.

It sounds like you have done what you can, but keep in mind a bruise can get infected. If you have a large bruise that is warm to the touch and has a red ring around the edges, it may be infected. If this is the case, you need to go see a doctor for antibiotics and you should use heat on the bruise instead of ice

in many cases ice packs will decrease the swelling from a bruise. once you've a purple line in it that could want to signify you've ruptured something below the bruise. If the ice hasn't helped, get to a healthcare professional or to an emergency hospital. And do it quick!!!

Surgery is not going to get rid of a bruise, will make it worser. You have pretty much done all you can do except for one thing: wait it out.

makeup. Bruises aren't like scars, they will go away on their own. Until then, cover them up.
