I am a larger woman and when I go to the mall to buy clothes for myself, all the clothes that fit my bust don't fit any where else. I have had to take so-called ready-to-wear clothing home to do alterations to make it fit me properly.

Usually, I have to take the waist in because it is entirely too big and fits me like a tent. I am 6 foot tall, wide (not broad) shouldered, and I have a larger bust line than most women. However, I have a small waist and am considered by my friends to be very curvy for a woman.

Why do they assume that just because you are a large woman, you are also short and fat? What about tall women like me with a somewhat athletic build? I am not short and fat- I am tall and relatively thin.

For instance, I wear a size 16 women's jeans, but I have to get a L or XL top to fit me and tuck it in at the waist to keep it from looking so blousy. (blouse-like).

Does anybody know of good online stores that address this issue?

For a long time designers have based sizing and cuts on a fit model (size 8) with specific measurements, e.g. the length of the back has to be a certain thing, arms, waist, bust, etc. I forget exactly what they were. Smaller sizes are cut down from there and larger sizes are scaled up. It's cheaper for the manufacturers not to get a variety of size models. The problem is as women vary farther from that standard the scaling doesn't work as well. They need to find new fit models in a variety of sizes.

I know, what is up with that? I have the same problem coz I'm a big girl too. I find BIB (big is beautiful) a pretty good plus size clothing line and they can have 'up to the minute' fashions. They sell in Myer and if you go on eBay, there are sellers that provide a wide range of plus size that I really like. I think there is another shop/clothes line called BeMe (be me) and I think they have warehouses or something but I'm not sure where they are. eBay Australia (assuming that is where you are) is a good place to start! Unfortunately we have to search a little harder, but there are some really great clothes out there that will fit us!!

I have had the same problem all my life. My bust is about 10 inches more than my waist, and matches my hips- but I'm only 5'2". Before they sold 2-piece bathing suits separately, I used to switch 'em so I had a medium bottom and a large/XL top (depending on their definition of large.)
