I only use cloth diapers with both of my previous children, but have never tried to use cloth in the first few days after birth, while still in the hospital. Will the hospital have a problem with using cloth?

Please, only respond if you actually know the answer to this!

Thanks.

When my DD was born 10 years ago, the hospital provided cloth diapers!
When my son was born 2 years-ago we brought our own (and some olive oil to make it easy to wipe the meconium off his skin.) He never once left our sight and we did all his diaper changes, so no one said anything.

I definitely think it could be done. Though you may run into a couple of snags like nurses with attitude when it's time to weigh the baby. But honestly, I'd think you'd have to bring too many diapers to and from the hospital. Newborns go through 10 to 12 diapers a day, and then you'd have to worry about washing them shortly after you get home.

If I were you, I would bring a few special cloth diapers. Maybe one to put on him/her right after birth so their first diaper can be a cloth one. And one to wear under their "going home outfit". And then maybe one or two extra ones *just in case*. Those handful of diapers will fit into a small drawstring wetbag with no problem.

Good luck!

Many hospitals in Canada require you bring your own diaper supply to the hospital anyway, so I can't see them having a problem with cloth.

If they object, tell them to butt out, it's YOUR baby and their opinion is not important. As long as you are containing the diapers so they don't contaminate the area, they have nothing to say on this matter.

Congrats!

I plan on bringing cloth to the hospital, along with a dry pail. I'd let them know ahead of time or at least ask-I don't want to deal with a rashy newborn in disposables. They don't have to pay for them so I don't see why they would have a problem. My hubby is a pro at diapering so he could go home and wash them if we have to stay that long. I think it will be easy if your baby rooms in with you, I know some hospitals do that-I'd prefer that anyways! Invest in some liners, that meconium is sticky! Good luck!

I wouldn't ask the hospital, I would just bring my diaper stash and use them whether I had permission or not. When my children were born, I did use the disposables the hospital provided, but they would have allowed me to bring cloth. Best of luck!

I have never heard of a hospital using cloth diapers as they aren't as convienient as disposable diapers. I suggest you contact the hopsital and ask them directly rather than take the risk and assume or be ill-advised because different hospitals may have different policies.

If it's important to you and you don't want to introduce your child to disposables when he or she will eventually be in cloth I suggest you bring your own and urge the nurses to use them. But be understanding and flexible if they cannot.

Actually with our first and third babies, the hospital provided cloth, with a bag hanging off the cart the bassinet was on, every time the nurse came in to check my vitals she took the bag with her when she left and they would have been sent to laundry to be sterilized and redistributed.

Our second baby was born in a different hospital and they had disposable, but they asked when I was doing my pre-admit if I had a preference and if so, what it was.

In short...each hospital has their own policy, you're best to check with them when doing the pre-admit paperwork so that way when you DO go into hospital to have baby, you know what to prepare for.

Good luck!

I all depends on the hospital. Luckily, I delivered in a hospital where they DID use cloth diapers, and continued to do it at home.

Every hospital will be different. The hospital I had my daughter in did allow it. They said, though, that they would prefer for the baby to changed most times by one of the parents.

Congrats on baby #3!

In the hospital I used to train at, while training at the nursery.. babies are usually put on diapers. After birth your baby will have to stay in the nursery for a while right? and the nurses there will be the one's in charge of changing their diapers when they poo or pee and even to feed them. Given the number of babies in the nursery, your baby would probably be crying for a long time when she gets wet before she gets changed. but maybe you could ask the hospital. but i think the hospital will have a problem with using cloth. :-)
