The first two weeks is the hardest part of breastfeeding. Your breasts will get in such a state that you would never think that they could get like that. Just use Lansinoh ointment. It works wonders. I never thought anything could make you heal so quickly.
If you are having cracked and bleeding nipples, check with your hospital lactation consultants to see if you are in the proper position and the baby is latching on properly. If you do it right, it shouldn't be painful. That is the key.
The reason you shouldn't use a pump when the nipples are cracked is because the suction is usually harder. It you do use the pump anyway, make sure that you start off gradually and then when the nipples are pliable, move the pump suction up little by little. That is the easiest way and least painful.
Don't give up. Once you make it past this hurdle, you will have it made. Breastfeeding is tough, but SO WORTH IT!
I breastfed both my babies for 4 1/2 months. My daugther was born in Sept of 2004 and son born May 2006.

You need to apply pure lanolin between the feeds to speed the healing time. You shouldn't be using an electric breasy pump with cracked nipples because it will worsen them as opposed to doing it manually. Breast pumps are supposed to simulate the sucking of the baby but won't with a motor and cause you more pain.
Lansinoh Lanolin Cream for Breastfeeding Mothers is safe to use while breast feeding.

When I started breastfeeding, before we got the hang of it, my nipples were sore, cracked, and bleeding, too. It was really bad. But, we just kept on truckin' and it they healed in about 2 weeks. The Lansinoh (pure lanolin) helped a lot. I didn't stop pumping either. The lacatation consultant said to keep it up.
The hardest part is to just keep with it. It hurt like heck, but by the third week, everything was wonderful.
Congratulations, by the way. You are doing the best thing for your baby by giving her your breast milk. Good for you!

I got sore and cracked nipples too. Get some lansinoh at the drugstore. And keep reapplying. The suction doesnt help, but the lansinoh does. And keep switching sides. I know it hurts, but it will get better. You dont want to lose your milk in trying to rest. But if I gets to bad then you gotta do what you gotta do. ALso I would look up a lactation consultant in your neighborhood to get help from. Bless you.

Lanolin! You don't have to wipe it off and it creates a moisture barrier. You can also try block nursing. Nurse on one side for a few feeds to give the other side a break. If they are really bad, try nipple sheilds. Also make sure you are not using plastic coated or synthetic fabric breast pads, to allow your nipps to breath as much as possible.
As for the pump. It sucks, rather than suckles (the baby's mouth pushes and pulls instead of just pulling) so it can tear up your nipples. if you HAVE to pump, like for work, put lanolin cream on your nipples and around the horn to prevent chaffing and nurse on one side while you pump the other to take advantage of natural let-down.

Lansinoh or Lanisol??? Something like this...ask your pharmacist...it's an excellent cream to apply directly to your nipples that is safe to use while the baby is latching that will help you with your sore nipples.
My friend SWEARS by it...I think it's a "lanolin" cream.

i had the same problem use one breast at a time while the other one rests it will take 3 -4 weeks for your breast's to get used to the feedings and use a cream on the breast you can get it at any store next to the baby product and let your breast breath in between feeding
