Begin by cutting down to two hours a day. Select only meaningful programs where you actually are learning something from, instead of it being wasted hours out of your day which you won't be able to recall later as it has no impact on you. Once you realize that you are not addicted to quality programming. It might bew hard for you to select even two hours of programming to view and eventually you can cut it down to one hour. Begin reading some books of interest to you, more food for thought.

Believe it or not, many people live without a TV in their house. You don't have to do the same as them, but getting rid of it - at least for a while - is easily the best way to break your TV habit. It may seem extreme - after all, your friends will talk to you about the shows you all watch, and the sports teams that you follow. But if you really want to get control of your time (and your life) you should consider the cold turkey approach.

Unplug the TV and move it out of sight - into a closet if possible, and set a date for yourself, maybe a month away, when you'll allow yourself to turn the TV back on. If there's a show you really can't miss, ask a friend to Tivo/tape it for you, or allow yourself a TV night at a friend's house. But you have to break the habit of turning on the TV when you're alone and just letting it play all night.

Come up with things to do with the time that you used to spend watching TV, and you really won't miss it. Of course you should study, but you should also do fun things for yourself - get a good a book (some page-turner, nothing serious) or start exercising more. Try to cook dinner from a real recipe instead of heating something in the microwave. Try whatever you feel like doing. Now that you've got rid of your TV, you're getting a huge chunk of your life back. The more you enjoy the time you've got back, the less you'll miss TV.

I was also like you. Now my TV watching time has come down considerably. I used to watch cricket endlessly and useless violent movies. Fortunately I have other good hobbies also such as reading good books etc. I came across some wonderful personality development books which help us to overcome our weaknesses and make us a better, successful and productive persons. Take the following steps :
1. Think seriously what you can do in the time you are wasting
in front of TV.
2. Stop seeing the useless junk programs.
3. Do some other interesting activity whenever you feel the urge
to switch on TV.
4. Read time management books.
5. Have some goals.
6. Develop interest in hobbies.
7. Try sincerely to achieve your goals.

At that time concentrate in any other thing for 2,3 days and then slowly start studying at the same time. give it to a homeless person. The only thing worse than sleeping in the rain is being bored while sleeping in the rain. Give them the box the tv came in too, so they can have some privacy. It's the least they deserve.
