Many conditions are associated with hematuria. The most common causes include the following:
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men over 40
Kidney and bladder stones
Kidney disease
Medications (e.g., quinine, rifampin, phenytoin)
Trauma (e.g., a blow to the kidneys)
Tumors and/or cancer in the urinary system
Urinary tract blockages
Viral infections of the urinary tract and sexually transmitted diseases, particularly in women
There are rare diseases and genetic disorders that also cause hematuria. Some of these are:
Sickle cell anemia (inherited blood disorder)
Systemic lupus erythmatosus (chronic inflammatory disorder of connective tissue)
von Hippel-Landau disease (hereditary disease in which benign tumors form on the spinal cord, kidneys, testicles, and other organs)

"Sometimes" is the key here. Once a month or so, could be from heavy lifting or muscle strain. Periodic blood can also result from infections.
How much blood? How long does it bleed? Any pain associated with it? Are you taking any blood thinners like those associated with heart conditions? Aspirin?
Can't rule out tumors or cancer. Rough sex with Ken? Or Crystal? Venereal disease? Self abuse?
Piercings?
Blood can develop from within the kidney itself, or from above the kidney or after the kidney as far as the urine flow goes.
If you've got pain associated with the bloody pee, you may as well go have the whole nine yards of tests. You'll need a urine specimen, probalby start with an ultrasound, strain your urine for stones, maybe get an intravenous pyelogram where they inject dye into your bloodstream and look for bleeding. Or a nuclear medicine scan for the same thing. Or a cystoscopy, taking a tube and shoving it up your yin-yang for a look around the bladder and urethra. You'll be knocked out for that one.
We can do a whole lot of tests for bleeding. It's fun.

so riddle me this. at what point exactly would you take a look at your symptoms and say"hmmm, this here looks pretty messed up, perhaps I should seek professional medical advice, yes that's exactly what i'll do, I shall go and see a doctor most ricki tick by jobe!"
Cause brotha, if blood in your piss aint enough then quite simply I dont know what would be and I would be impressed to hear what it is. Dont listen to any answer on this one, ignore even the most logical and rational of answers, log off the internet for a few hours and go to a walk in clinic. I can understand that people dont like and dont trust doctors, but can they honestly be giving worst or less trustworthy advice than yahoo answers!? Knucklehead, go get checked out.

It's called hematuria. The cause can be from a simple kidney stone or infection to something serious like cancer. In either case it means get yourself to a doctor pronto and get checked out.

have low back pain? any pain while urinating? do you drink plenty of water? you may be dehydrated or have a kidney stone. drink lots of water, and cranberry juice. that will hydrate you and clean your kidneys. i mean drink lots. some powerade wouldn't hurt anything either. if you have pain in any area after that make a doctor appointment.
