Make it easy ... download this free utility & follow the simple instructions:

http://partitionlogic.org.uk/

Partition Logic is a free hard disk partitioning and data management tool. It can create, delete, format, defragment, resize, and move partitions and modify their attributes.

Actually, you can have 2 operating systems. But, if you just want the XP, find a Win98 startup disk and format the drive in MSDOS. Boot up to the startup disk, change to C: drive and type format C: that will wipe everything off of the drive. You should be able to install XP and format the drive during the install process though.

Assuming you have set the computer to boot from CD Rom in the BIOS as Thomas suggested, when the Windows XP setup screen appears, choose to delete the current operating system and then read and follow the instructions from there until you get to format using NTFS System (QUICK) Once that is complete, Windows XP will install.

Try booting to the XP CD. It will give you the options to delete, recreate, and format the partition that the W2K system is on.
