When u have the urge to push you push it is really hard to stop or not push....when I was in labor with my son they told me to stop pushing b/c he was stuck and it was hard not to push when I had the urge to push... and Why would u want to give up? That's just crazy. If u did start carrying on like that and acting foolish they would probably dismiss you as being dramatic.

Well yes you can but is a very bad idea and selfish. By not actively pushing you make thing much harder and more dangerous for you and the baby.
I actually have a friend that gave up during labor. She was too far along for a c section and almost there. But she told the dr's aren't we paying you to do this and quit trying to push. It put allot of stress on the baby but she was ok.
I can't imagine how anyone could even consider giving up. Look at this way if it's so bad wouldn't you want it over as soon as possible? Eh.. anyways for those that are so afraid there is the option of c section.

HA! Did my Husband ask this! I'm going to say yes you can because I did. I was in labor for what seemed like an eternity. I was so tired from pushing. I had to push in threes - you know - push three times. It was like a marathon that wouldn't end. After 90 minutes of this I was really tired and delirious with pain. So when they had me push again I just pretended to push and made the sounds. I simply couldn't. I had no energy. Next time around I pushed again. Eventually she came out.

Mentally, yes, a woman will tire and "give up" during labor, and a lot of those women will go ahead and push, but some are given c-sections as it causes stress to the baby.

I was in labour for 3 days, and after 30 min of pushing, it was clear I was exhausted, especially it being 12:30 in the morning. Being all drugged up, and well being in labour for 3 long days.
My doctor asked me if I would like some help, she referred to the "vac", so I agreed, but you still have to push obviously. It just doesn't take as much effort. (in my opinion anyways)
You can't give up, it's not possible, and besides, the end result is worth the pushing and pain. Trust me.
Best of Luck to you!

Actually you can and probably will quite a few times during labor. I was in labor with my first child for what felt like forever (18hours) after the 17th hour I did give up, so two nurses got on each side of me and locking arms and pushing on my stomach they pushed my baby out with each contraction with the doctor pulling. So yes it is very possible to give up during labor..

You may feel like giving up, but the "soon to be mommy" in you won't. Have you heard of an Epidural? It really does help with the pain.
I've had natural childbirth and have had an epidural. It doesn't take away all the pain, but it sure helps a lot. Good luck to you.

Jan 20th:
I am not laughing at you for asking: I just know the feeling. And when I was 4 months pregnant with my first I wondered the same thing.

You can become extremely exhausted during labor but the contractions will continue. And the more you push with the contraction the quicker it will be over with. So, in answer to your question, no you can't give up.

Technically, you can decide you are going to stop pushing, but it only puts strain on the baby and causes more problems. If you were physically unable to push anymore, they would have to do a C-section.
