Good question. Depends on where you are comming from. If you would ask pensioners, handicapped persons and civil servants they will tell you a loud yes. If you are you, capable and looking for a bright future, you will say an even loud no. Some people have suffered the last decade and a half, others have (disproportionally) succeeded.
In my humble opinion there was no future for Russia as a communist state. Although people have suffered, this is the future, how many kickups there might be right now. Russia is still developing their economy and (their form of) democracy.

I agree with Martin D. My fiance is Russian and I live there. Some are nostalgic for the old times, even the young but they all know that realistically, it wasn't workable.
Have you ever been to Russia? Modern Russia is really not as bad as you seem to think. Sure there are poor people, especially the old who haven't been able to adapt to the revolution at their age, but the majority have a reasonable standard of living. In the big cities of European Russia, people have a pretty good standard of living. I live in an oil town in Siberian Russia and although some of the buildings are badly-maintained, people get by ok. Racism has been exaggerated by the western press so far. There have been some incidents but in reality, they are few and far between.

Previously two countries for patronising communist block. One is Soviet union and the other is China. China is there only for patronising communism in name sake. However, history shows that on receipt of Nobel prize by Gorbecheave for his Peristroica and Glassnost - all are anti-thesis of communism - the Soviet block is no more. But we never forget the sounds and furry of some independant leaders like Fiedal Castro, Col.Gadaffi, Vietnam, Cambuchia, Venunsula and Ahmedi Nejada of Iran etc. Here we heroically remember the contributions of Sadam Hussain in Iraq for the protection of sovereignity, independance, existence etc. of his nation and his people of Iran.
It is a pathetic situation that there is only one supermacy in the world order that as everybody knows , it may either known as capitalism or by name George Bush; he is not representing the interest of the majority of the people inhabited in the state. He is even turning a deaf ear to the interest of the world population at large. He even negleting the UNO. The UNO is now is not having its status existence . It is only existing for its name, for getting asssistance from USA and dancing according to the tunes of one George Bush. So Bush is the self proclaimed leader of the world.
Such Bush and bushes can be rooted out only by a new world order where there is Equality, Fraternity and Liberty. It is for this the world is waiting for the withering away of the state, globalisation and an independant, just ruler for the world then only we can bring equality, fraternity and liberty to the people for the people and by the people and for peaceful existence on earth. All we wait for this world order including the people of USA. Shall we put the George Bush out of the plannet for the humanity and their peaceful existence in the world?

No, under no circumstances. Russians have been randomly arrested by utilising the NKVD/KGB and could be tortured in Moscow's Lubyanka reformatory. Russians had de-facto serfdom under the Propyska equipment that legally tied them to the land they lived on. Russians have been compelled to paintings the activity the government assigned them to. in any different case, they have been convicted of "social parasitism". Russians have been damaging themselves, yet their Communist occasion leaders lived fat off the land and have been a prosperous 'nomenklatura'.

no, it was not. the major problem for those who would answer "yes" is not an absolute but relative social and economic deprivation. huge inequality, corruption, and shocking life-styles been displaying by the new rich are causing many Russians think that Communist system was more fair and promising for the "simple" people.

Methinks you're asking the wrong people. Talk to a Russian- & get their opinion. I wonder if they have a Russian version of "Yahoo Answers..."? Anybody know??? I'd love to know THEIR interpretation of us. :)
