I have a 1997 Suzuki Vitara JLX model. Recently, when driving for roughly 20 minutes or more, i find it very hard to put the car into first gear and if i try to put it in reverse, it grinds. This does not happen when i start the car, only after driving for roughly 20 or more minutes. I have to turn off the engine and wait a while before resuming driving normally and not experiencing the same problem. Please help!

Well I going on a limb but im guessing your car has upwards of 120k miles. This being said Im going to guess that your not the original owner, which means you have no clue of all the services done to the car. Most manual transmission need to be serviced at 100k miles if you havent had to replace the clutch sooner. It sounds like your fluid has been broken down do to heat and mileage, its not lubricating like its supposed to when heated it thins out too much. As for the grinding sound you probly have the sincro going out in reverse. Chances are your clutch is fine as your not complaining about any sliping. Most good tranny shops should give free estimates get it checked but manual transmissions are not cheap to work on.

wierd that you have problems getting the car into FIRST gear.. usually if its the transmission.. you have problems will the 2nd or 3rd gear.. but the fact that you have troubles with the reverse also makes me think its not a coincidence that these 2 parts arent working correctly at the same time, although you say they have 2 different sounding problems (shifting + grinding). I doubt your trans fuel is low, becuase if it dies after 20 minutes, but then works again after a pause.. then it didnt recharge itself.. the supply is still there. What i am thinking is that your fans and coolants arent working properly, allowing your transmission to overheat.. which is NOT GOOD! transmissions cost a lot, and it sounds like you've put enough stress on it that it's starting to deteriorate to the point its begging you to replace its cooling system. The cranking when you reverse still confuses me.. i still think its no coincidence these 2 parts started working improperly around the same time... but i think its more complicated then having 1 solution fix each problem. Cranking tells me 2 parts are rubbing on each other causing friction. You may possibly have some damage you werent aware about that your mechanic would know more about then me. What probably happened, because it sounds like youve had this problem long enough, is that becuase your transmission was stressing trying to function, it was putting more stress on another part relating to your reverse... thus making your, whatever, ware faster. You'll probably need to replace your, whatever. =)

hope that helps! goodluck!

PS(edit):
omg ima strangle someone if you drive a standard... i figured you drove a manual.. just because everyone does... and the fact you said first gear didnt surprise me because just because its a manual doesnt mean it doesnt have gears, just means you dont need to physically put the car into those gears... but now that i read other people mention a standard... you did say "(I)... put the car into first gear..." ... most people who drive a manual would say something like "when the car goes into 1st gear..."
please dont tell me i made up this 100page diagnosis for a car that doesnt even exist...

especially when if you said the word "standard" i could have just said "CLUTCH"

im not blaming you btw, if you took it that way... im just releasing my frustrations at my lack of ability to read other peoples suggestions before making my own... f*cK lol

Do you have a sick shift or automatic. If its a stick you might want to get your cluch checked out. If its an automatic check the transmission fluid. Either way, its going to take a shop to fix it. I say take it to a shop where they can run a diognostic on it. Then once you find out what the problem is, you can have them repair it or you can repair it cheaper.
But I think its your cluch or transmission fluid.

You probably need to have the clutch linkage or (if it's hydraulic) fluid checked. A bad slave cylinder can cause fluid to leak. Make sure you are pushing the pedal ALL the way down to the floor also. Some people get lazy and don't disengage the clutch all the way.

Obviously this car is a standard shift, so any of you guessers who told this guy to change the transmission fluid is going to have him looking for something that isn't even there. Your clutch is on it's last leg.

You might want to start by checking the transmission fluid. It sounds like the transmission is getting too hot, and the number one cause would be insufficient fluid.

Sounds like you need a new STick shift. Have it checked.

sounds like you need to replace your clutch , bleed the fluid or top up your clutch fluid reservoir .
