Stains on the hardwood floor?

Recently had guests move out of the spare bedroom, but they left it horribly messy. Decided the best way to rid of the smell would be to pull the carpet. Once pulled I noticed two black stains in the area that they would set their drinks and ash trays at. Is there a way to get rid of or lighten the stain without ruining the flooring?

If it's burns you will need to sand them out, if its from a drink the sanding will be less work.
