You don't "have" to do anything but die and pay taxes. If you truly are ill , it benefits the employer NOT to have you there in the first place.

You can double check with you states labor board. Legally your company needs to have the number posted. Thay can't ask you to go in if you sick. It's the same if you get ill while at work. They may ask you for a doctors note, read over your company hand-book to see what there policy is! When I was in management we were told if someone said they were sick to try getting them to stay, usually asking them to stay for a few hours and then just hide from them, but if they say there sick and need to leave you have to let them go in-case the illness is catchy or more severe. Management blows, there all sell outs!

Yes, the employer can tell you that you have to come in. The law does not protect employees who call in sick. As much as it might not seem fair, and employers should expect employees to need time off due to whatever reason, they can legal terminate you if you do not show up.
