The first time I got my period, I remember looking down and immediately thinking "OH MY GOD, I DIDN"T CRAP MYSELF!"
Haha- The point of saying that is that it's completely normal for your period to be brown or dark red. Even now, after having had my period for amost 10 years, it starts off brown.
Mark today's date on your calender with a star. Count 28 days from today and mark another star on your calender. That way, you kindof know when to expect it. After you get it for a few months, you'll start to be able to really predict when it is, and it's good because you can plan social activities and make sure that you have enough pads/tampons.
I didn't get cramps during my first few periods, but when they start, just remember that they're completely normal- and we all know they suck. It's something women everywhere can relate to.
Find a medicine that works for you- I've found that Aleve works really well. Try to avoid a lot of caffeine for the days around your first period day- it can help to prevent cramps.
Staying healthy also helps keep your period regular and manageable. It can help with cramps and the length of time you've got your period.
It sounds gross, but don't be afraid if you see some dark red, jelly-like clumps in your flow. They're clots, and they're 100% normal to have.
Having your period is gonig to be something you'll get really used to and eventually it'll be as normal as taking showers.
It'll never be fun, but the more experienced you get, the less tedious it is, and if you have any other questions, women anywhere and everywhere can help- after all, we're all in the same boat 12 weeks a year- (3 months, YIPES!)
Congrats, and good luck!!

It is normal for it to be brown. This is old blood containing dead cells. It will be more reddish when you become "regular". Best tips for being on you period are to keep yourself clean, exercise even if you feel tired(this will help with cramping) and if you do have a problem with cramps or moodiness, ask your mom for a bottle of Pamprin. It lasts longer than Midol and works faster, meaning you have to take less of it.
You should talk to your mom or if she isn't available, an older female relative about this too.

A good sign you're getting close to the time when your first period will arrive is if you notice a thick, white mucous discharge coming from your vagina. ...

everyone is different. in this case there is really no norm. just expect some cramping which could include backaches, upset stomachs ,mood swings and headaches. it doesnt happen to everyone but if something comes up that is very painful tell your mom!!!!!!!!!!!!!
