It depends on what you are looking for.

For variety I like the PSP

Games, movies, Jpeg viewer, MP3 player, surf the web.

With the cost of pro duo sticks coming down, you can get a 4 gig for $100 and load it up with mind distracting items.

It now links to the PS3 to allow for playing of PS1 games.

And as the other answer states, depending on your version you can create and run home brew games.

I have both and use the PSP more often.

well if you have one, and you have a ds lite, and you like the ds lite better, than you seem ike a plain old nintendo revolutionary gaming fan. i would rather have an sp than a ds lite, because i'm happy with my wii, but want something that i can play on the go, that can get scratched, and doesn't cost to much. i mean, an sp, metal slug advance, and a harry potter game is under $100. i had a ds lite, but i sold it after 2 months. i got it 1 month after they came out..... i regret that i bought it

The psp does not suck. Sony just made it suck with their firmware updates that do not allow homebrew. If you can get a 2.8 psp or below however, it wont suck as much because you can downgrade it and play homebrew games. You can also install devhook to emulate a higher firmware to play more recent psp games.
