When you have your period, you are basically shedding dry blood which was once hard on your body. The blood, while in the body, as already dried out, and when it comes out it gets even more drier to the point that it rots. Also if you don't change your pad every three hours, the blood dries up and starts rotting, thus forming the brown color. For these reasons, the blood which was originally red turned brown.
Note to the person that said blood turns brown when it touches oxygen. Blood is originally blue in the body, when it doesn't contain oxygen. Therefore when you look at your veins, the color is blue. However after the blood is exposed to oxygen, it automatically turns red.
This example also works the same for when a person has a nose bleed. When your nose first starts to bleed, the blood is red. However after a period of time, the blood begins to dry and starts to rot. When the blood is rottened, it turns brown.

Is it brownish just at first or through the whole cycle? Brownish is definitely normal and probably just means the blood has been flowing slowly through the uterus and gradually exposed to oxygen. If it's brownish through the whole period, you might want to check with your doctor just to be safe. Best wishes!

Blood changes color when exposed to oxygen. All the blood is coming out slowly so some of what is coming out towards the end has been exposed to oxygen and has changed color while inside your body.

When blood makes contact with the air, the color changes. If the blood coming out of you is actually brown, that's another story.....

because blood is only red when it contains oxygen... those blood cells have died and flattened and no longer contain oxygen :-)
