Okay so ive had my mice for a few weeks now, I've bough Bi-odor to controll their odor (ps. their male). Well i live with my bf and and my bfs mom and supposivley she can smell them throughout the house when i cant even smell them in my room, but she gripes about it 24/7 like she is the most immature person ever seriously and she makes a big deal out of everything.. Does getting them fixed take that odor away or would it be a waste of time since mice dont live long anyways, she said if the odor isnt gone they have to go, and thats basicly not an option for me! I clean there cage about 2 times a day and i clean out thier wheels and replace their bedding once a day i mean what else can they do i even have the shampoo and fragrance spray for them .. What else can i do?? i dont want to just let them go they are tamed animals they would probley die out in the wild, & no one wants them more or less i dont trust anyone else with them what can i do please help.. No dumb answers please.

I had pet mice too (three males) and the first few weeks I had them their cage got very stinky (even though I cleaned them once a week), but then after a while the smell started going away. Maybe the fact that you clean the cage twice a day even makes things worse, because each time you clean it the mice feel like they have to spread their scent around their home again, to make it feel like home. Twice a day is much too often anyway, and probably stresses your mice alot. Try doing it no more than twice a week and see what happens.
I'd stay away from using air fresheners, cat litter, or any other kind of chemical against odor - these are all toxic to your mice, especially because they groom themselves and so will swallow any chemicals that come in contact with their environment or their fur.
I'm sure you're already doing it, but make sure you keep the door closed to your room. It sounds like your boyfriend's mom is really stubborn, but maybe you can try sitting down with just her and calmly explaining all that you're doing to keep the "smell" down, and how you feel about your pets - that you care about them and don't want to just dump them with anyone, or anywhere.
Also, maybe her complaints about the mice are just her way of showing she's annoyed about other things - do you think she minds that you live with her and her son?
I really hope everything works out and that you can keep your little mice!

Since you have just two mice, I'm assuming they are girls as male mice have a tendency to fight with each other. Two female mice would not have that much of a smell. I had three girls in a 10 gal. aquarium and I never found a odor problem.

If your boyfriend's mother hates rodents she will do everything in her power to make you get rid of them, even to the point of making a mountain out of a mole hill, aka making a big deal out of it when it's a very small problem.

Please don't let them go outside! You're right, they would never survive in the wild. Your mice are domesticated, that means they can't survive without our help. As a last resort, and I hope it never comes to that, find someone who will take care of them for you.

When I clean my rat cages I deodorize and disinfect them by this method:
fill a spray bottle with white vinegar
fill a spray bottle with hydrogen peroxide
spray the interior of the freshly-washed cage with hydrogen peroxide, let sit for a few minutes and wipe dry
spray the interior of the cage with white vinegar, let sit for a few minutes and wipe dry
Now put the cage back together
Do spot cleanings everyday, picking out their toilet corner and spraying with Hydrogen Peroxide. The HP is going to kill the bacteria, because it's the bacteria in the urine and the feces that is causing the smell. HP leaves a fresh clean scent behind.

Please, do not use dryer sheets or frebreze around your mice. The smell and ingredients of these products is too hard on their little respiratory systems.

You may need to experiment with beddings until you find one that better absorbs odor. You may need to clean the cage more.

If that doesn't work get back to me, I have more tricks up my sleeve.

Hello, I hope this helps you. I used to breed mice as pets for the local pet store. The bad news is male mice mark their territory with urine. End of story. Male mice are going to smell. Always. Sorry. The good news is female mice don't mark their territory with urine, and it takes a really negligent owner to make a female mouses cage smell bad. I wish I could tell you something that would help with the fellas odor. Good luck!

Hey,
the best thing to do is keep them in a room thats not to cold or to hot with the door shut. Also clean them out about once a week because if you clean out their smell they will feel they have to put there mark on it. Play with your mouse at least once a day but give them some peace and quiet.
Those should help but if not move the mouse into your room.
Hope this was useful

Mice will have some smell. There are certain beddings that will help with odor control. The main bedding is called Carefresh. It doesn't contain any oils like cedar or pine bedding. When mice urinate on cedar or pine the oils just make the smell worse. Try Carefresh. If you are unable to keep them take them to Petco. They will adopt them out to good pet owners. I used to be a store manager there for 7 years. We always found good homes. Hopefully this helps

OK if every thing you say is true and you clean there cage out it has nothing to do with the mice and everything to do with the boyfriends mother honey you live in her house she does not want them there and that is why she is complaining she cant smell them she is just being a B*+CH you need to get rid of either them or the boyfriends mother to keep the peace or be sneaky tell her you got rid of them if there is a place you can put them so she can not see, hear or smell them do so if you want to keep them

Mice do tend to stink, but if you clean the cage as often as you say, I don't see how they could. You do take the waste out of the house I assume.
You can't let them go; they are not wild mice.
That's what you get for living with your boyfriend's mom.

I know nothing about mice, sorry.
But how about you call a local vet and check with him or even a pet shop.
You might just have to let them go to someone else if it becomes an issue within the family. Family comes first.

Peace and love your way.

I have pet rats and even after cleaning their cage it still has a certain musty smell from the bedding itself. I put fresh unused dryer sheets like bounce in there with the bedding and it makes it smell real nice for about 2 days.

It sounds like you're doing all that you can.

Soooo, I wonder if she's smelling other mice. Not pet mice. My building has mice problems, and they stink.
