My SIL is due late March and I want to be sure she has all the necessities. I am working on the big stuff like crib, travel system and pack n play but what else will she need?

She will want all of the items listed in all these answers. But she will need rest more than any thing. Make time in your schedule to give her a time out every now and then. Go over and help with chores for a few days. All these material things are nice to have but not nearly as important as knowing that someone will be there for her when she needs them.

LOTS of stuff. You can look online for checklists that include what you should buy and in what quantities. You may want to buy one crib set (as they can be VERY expensive) but also buy 3 fitted crib sheets for when the baby's diaper has a leak or you just need to change the sheets.

Here is a link to a helpful web page:

And keep in mind that when you make your registry, the store will more often than not provide you with a printed checklist of suggested items to ask for. This helps a lot.

Ok. I just had my first and my perspective is different now than it was before I had her. Having one of those "infant" car seats (the kind that you can remove and put in a stroller without waking baby is a must have). A Bumbo for when baby turns about 3 months old is very helpful so she will not have to hold baby all the time. Get a baby sling (like Kangaroo Korner Fleece Sling) is very helpful for "wearing" baby especially if she is breastfeeding.

Stroller, car seat, Kick N Play bouncer that you can also feed the baby in later until they can sit up in a high chair. Bottle warmer, diapers, diaper pail with liners, baby bathtub or equivalent. There is so much stuff to get. I overbought for my first. Swings are nice and helpful. An activity mat was the best present I got for my daughter. My son liked it as well.

Haha.. just had my little girl a month ago. And everyone else who has answered.. have good answers..

Somethings I wouldn't go without..

A Diaper Genie..trust me.
Gripe Water or oval drops
TONNES of diapers and wipes. not just newborn diapers though.. her baby will grow out of those fast.
Bottles if she's bottle feeding...bottle sanitizer. I have a microwave one.
Thermometer preferably an ear one.
Battery Charger for all the batteries the swing, and bouncy chair will take.
Tonnes of receiving blankets-she's gonna go through them like diapers.
Nasal Aspirator.
If she is bottle feeding.. Formula.. stock up.
A baby bath tub.. very useful.

I can't think of anything else..hmm.. there's always something you forget though. :)

How nice of you to be helping out.. Congrats, and keep us posted when she has the baby.

Bloody hell that list is long! And most of it is want to have rather than absolutely necessary.
I have a good carseat, pushchair, a few blankets heaps of clothes, 1 bottle and a dummy. Thats it! If you are breastfeeding why on earth would you express the milk? unless you have issues with YOUR OWN BABY feeding from you. asprin? absolutely not! if your not allowed any form during pregnancy why would you have it for babies? Ask a doctor about any medications. They rest is comman sense. If you use a cot then you need cot blankets etc I dont use one myself my baby sleeps in bed with me...sameas my other two children did.

A newborn baby needs very little: clothes, diapers, carseat, swaddling blankets and a sling. Other things are nice to have (swing, nursing pillow, Diaper Champ). It's hard to buy the "extra" stuff, because there's no way to know what she'll need and what will gather dust. Just ask her what she wants, and advise her to keep receipts!

I think its so great what your doing. Its good that your getting the big things but dont forget the little things either like baby shampoo, Baby wash, Nappy rash cream, brush ect.... You could even make a bascat and include all these types of things in it as a prsent for when the baby is born.

I hate it when I see babies without a head support in their car seats.
