Are you sure the fish was a guppy. I have had plenty of experience breeding guppies and they always gave birth to live young. Maybe the things you thought were eggs really weren't eggs but was poop, old food, etc. One way to tell if a guppy is pregnant is to look at a back of its body, and there should be either a red, brown, or blackish dot, about the size of the guppies mouth. The darker it is, the more pregnant it is.

They give live birth, the young are so small you'll have to look close to see them. Also there is a little cage you can put the mother in when she looks like she is trying to give birth, the openings are large enough for the babies but not for the mother. If you are unable to watch them pretty close then there is a plant you can buy where the babies can hide. If you have a lot of adults then you really need a birthing cage. They are not expensive. GOOD LUCK

They give birth to live young. They do eat them. I breed them so if you want to keep them alive get a breeding tank. They cost about $10 at a pet shop. It has a V shape inside the little tank so when the mother gives birth the babies go down to the bottom and she can't eat them. Then remove her and put her back in the tank with the rest of the fish. It also helps to keep the light off. It's less stress on the fish. If you keep babies feed them brine shrimp.

Guppies give birth to live young. Just make sure you separate the mother from ther fry, or they may be eaten.

Guppies hatch their eggs internally, and "give birth" to young capable of swimming and finding food.
