If you can induce an ELECTRIC charge on the matter that you want to block, then it is extremely possible. I did exactly this in my thesis.
I needed to devise a method to disguise non-functional air ion generators to appear to be functioning.
Anyway, the long and the short of it is that I used a metal mesh which I attached to the same electric potential as the ioniser pins. When the ions approached the mesh, they were repelled back due to the electric force field, and would not pass through. If the mesh was left to float (not attached to the ioniser pins), the ions would pass through unimpeded.

Well, you can start off with magnetics. Not the most practical, but still plausable: a magnetic field surrounding you that will repel any matter attempting to approach you. But even this has problems... What if the object isn't magnetic at all? Then you're relying on EM to hope the electrons repel eachother... Quantum technology. Its beyond our scope at the moment, and will continue to be for a while.

Please take note, on Star Trek, where you probably got the idea, they do not have such a device to repel all matter. in fact, it is the matter that responds and not the field. Their field is constant and if you leave your arm in it long enough it will burn the arm off with some kind of electric looking field.
So matter is not repel, it is obliviated if left in the field.
So if they couldn't acheive it in the 23rd century, what makes you think we can?
You'd probably do better though if you spoke to Scotty, he was the engineer right?

I'm afraid its not possible - not only that but with all the new physical theories on the horizon we can't imagine that it will ever be possible even in principle. Read 'the physics of star trek' to see what can and can't actually be done!

You might be able to deflect metal or magnets with some kind of whacko magnetic fields but all matter would require something beyond our technical or financial capabilities.

Use antimatter. You will have to learn how to control it first and it may just destroy any particles that come in contact with it but it's worth a try. If you manage it give me a call and I'll buy two.
