something is burning but is similar to the smell when you first turn on the heat for the season. It's been warm out lately so we didn't use the heat for about 2 weeks. Any idea what this smell is?
We have gas heat, forced hot air. We don't smell gas at all, it smells like a burning odor.

It is most likely dust build up if it has been awhile since you have had your furnace cleaned you may want to consider this as well as your duct work sometimes over time dust and debris that can be sucked in through your furnce fan etc. can accumulate in your pipes and the smell can transfer throughout your house. By cleaning your furnace you should get rid of the smell and your furnace will probably be more efficient.

Probably its just a bit of dust on the heat exchanger in your furnace. It should be gone in a cycle or two. You can also turn up your thermostat quite high so the furnace will run for awhile and that should cure the problem

Have your ductwork cleaned by a pro. What you smell is dust heating up.
