Respondants indicating that 1968 GTO's were only available with the 400 are correct. The three speed manual was actually the base choice in a GTO. Pontiac charged more for the upgrade to the 4 spd and automatic. Nearly all GTO's have the higher option transmissions. If your Goat was delivered with a three speed transmission, it did have a hurst manufactured shifter, but was not stamped "HURST" in the shifter lever as the four speed and the dual gate automatic hurst shifters were in large letters.

1. In 1968 there was no 389 or 455 in a GTO. 400 cid only.
2. The 4 speed transmission was made by muncie (sorry, I have no idea about the 3), but the shifter would be a hurst (possibly).

Only engine installed in '67-'69 GTOs was a 400 Pontiac. '66 was last year for 389 and tri-power. '67 was first year for 400 and the rochester Quadrajet. The automatics were the TH-400 3-speed. Not sure about the standard trannys.

In 68 GTO's had a 400 cubic inch motor and could be ordered with either a 3 or four speed manual as well as a 3 speed auto, I do believe that the four speeds were Hurst equiped but I am not sure of the three speeds as some three speeds were column mounted.

Firebird was available with 3 spd manual, but believe all GTO's had a four speed... Had a 68, but came with Hurst his-n-hers shifter with automatic... Maybe it was able to be ordered with a 3 speed, but I have never seen one...
