In over 5,000 years of continuous Chinese civilization, the first peaceful transfer of political power occurred on March 18, 2000 when Chen Shui-bian of the DPP party was elected president of Taiwan replacing the KMT party.
-Government - Taiwan is democratic, China is communist.
-Women's rights - Taiwan has women in top corporate and polical positions. Annette Lu is Taiwan's vice-president and a contender for president in 2008.
-Culture - Taiwan has preserved more of the traditional Chinese culture that was destroyed in the excessive cultural revolution in China. Most of the art from the Forbidden City is now in the National Palace Museum in Taipei. It was moved by Chiang Kai Chek to save if first from the invading Japanese then from the communists. It would have been destroyed during the cultural revolution if left in China.
-Language - Taiwan still uses traditional written Chinese characters that have been in use for over 1,000 years. China adopted a 'simplified' Chinese written language.
While the news constantly trumpets China's rapid growth, Taiwan is already a completely modern, industrialized country. The world's tallest building, Taipei 101, is in Taiwan. Some of the world's largest semiconductor companies and factories are in Taiwan. With the exception of some hydro power, almost all of Taiwan's electricity comes from 3 nuclear power plants. Taiwan has one of the world's largest particle accelerators and almost all of the best PC motherboards (ASUS, A-Bit, GigaByte) come from Taiwan.

There is no country called China. It is a short form name referring to the People's Republic of China - PRC.
Taiwan is not a Country, it is a Province of the Republic of China - ROC.
The ROC was formed in 1911 and after the civil war, in 1949, The CCP controlled the larger territory and they separated from the ROC by renaming the territory they held as the PRC.
The difference between the two is that:
The PRC is a Communist country under the one party rule of the Chinese Communist Party.
The ROC is now a full fledged Democracy .

China is the mother country. Taiwan is treated by China as a rebellious province and that they own Taiwan. Taiwan separates its identity from China by calling itself the Republic of Taiwan. Chinese people speak various Chinese dialects such as Fookien, Cantonese, Mandarin etc. while Taiwanese speak mainly Mandarin. Corny fact, Taiwanese have a hipper entertainment scene (as this was the country of F4, Jay Chou etc).
