It seems that if a woman is not ready to commit to marraige, people in church look down on it as though she must be hiding a fornicational sin with some lover in secret. I never hear of men being wrong for taking their time to get married, but if a woman in church is independant, they are snubbed. Anyone understand why this independent woman is so judged?

Yes. Not what you;'d expect from "God-fearing" church-going folks, but it's a western culture double standard. Sorry, but people love to dish, gossip, speculate, justify, and assume however it suits them when there is boredom and displeasure in their own hopeless lives. Get married when you are ready and not until. It's really no one else's business but your own. Good luck!

There are fundamentalists who think things like feminism or a woman being independant and not some submissive slave/toy for her husband is the cause of things like divorce, abortion, murder, suicide or even a sign that the end is coming! Many Christians are not that crazy, but still say things like "men are the head of the house" implying and no doubt feeling that women are inferior or that woman have a set place and outside of child bearing and the home is not it. This is why you are looked down upon. You're not in your proper place as a woman according too many Christian teachings (not "the bible" though). Find a new church.

Not all churches are like this, but too many are. It's one of the many reasons that put Christianity into the 'out of the question' pile when exploring spirituality.

Fundamentalists of most faiths seem to find the concept of an independent women less than appealing. From the sounds of it your church is extremely conservative, so this is no surprise. Many such churches feel that a woman should go from her father's authority to her husband's, although I've never heard of a specific example where a woman was ostracized for not being ready for marriage as long as she still recognized her father's authority over her.

I'm 30 - no kids - not married and I can personally say that church is not the only place where I'm looked down at. Society said that by a certain age, you should be married, have kids, etc. Well I didnt plan on not being married at 30. Thats how my cards where dealt. I would like to be married and have children but I don't want to rush it.

Because most traditional churches are very closed minded! I grew up in a Southern Baptist church and was looked down on for having a child out of wedlock. It was not my fault the father refused to grow up and get married! BUT I was the one the one who went through the stares and snickers!

Maybe, being under christianity, and belivers, that women usually are under their father's authority or their husband authority?
Independent women are usually judged on the factor that she may living a femist lifestyle, and don't have a submissive heart to God,and to a husband.
Just a thought, but not really for sure on the matter.

I have never heard of this happening in church... It does not happen in mine... No church or person should judge someone for not getting married .... It is the persons choice when they want to or if they ever get married.

so called "christians" are some of the most judgmental people on the face of the earth. they tend to feel like if you don't live your life the way they think you should be living it, you are going spend eternity in hell. instead accepting you for who you are (as the bible teaches) and praying for you that you will live your life as god sees fit, they snub you and won't have anything to do with you. just remember that god loves everyone and as long as you live your life honestly and sincerely ask for forgiveness for your sins, he will always love you. don't worry about what other people think.
