I noticed 3-4 furry-looking dots on each side of my fantail. Is this normal for fish? If it is...what does it mean?

It's ich. Ich is little white dots. Fungus is more of cottony white patches. Ich is a parasite that attaches to the goldfish when they are stressed. When they attach themselves and are feeding off the goldfish, they look like little grains of salt. After a day or two they fall off the goldfish, landing in the gravel. They procede to lay their eggs and then the cycle starts all over again. This can be deadly if not taken care of and they will rapidly reproduce. There are ways of getting rid of it without medication, but it takes very careful, deliberate, patient measure. Read the link. Getting medication makes it a little easier. Get a copper-based product such as CopperSafe® by Mardel, General Cure® by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals, or Aquari-Sol®.

It sounds like ICK. It will kill your fish if you do not treat it. You can get treatment at an aquarium supply place, just follow the directions. It is very contagious to the rest of the fish if you have more than one.

Nope- furry white dots are a disease, ich or fungus. Look up both diseases online and match the pictures to your fish. He will need to be treated with the appropriate medications or he will die.

where are the dots? it sounds like it might be ick -- if you go to the store and get some stuff called maroxy it is a good cure for many things.

many fantails grow small wen around their noses -- they are like little tiny pom poms. these are normal.

Alyssa is right, it's a fungal infection...nice thing though you can get tetracyline for fish at the pet store...without going to the vet.

Please don't take the fish to the vet...can you just imagine!

But it is serious and like Alyssa said it will kill your fish off fast.
