you will need a metal band saw, a bench grinder, a vise, files, and the proper steel to make the knife blades , a drill that will drill through the metal, usually a drill press, then something to make the knife handle from, wood, bone, antler, etc. its not easy.

I'm going to guess that your desires are honorable. It can be a rewarding hobby, once you become proficient. You will need a metal stock of some kind. Stainless steel is a good material. A good carbon steel that is hard is also good. You'll need files, diamond grit grinding wheels, as well as polishing disks. You need a good drill press with the best drill bits you can afford. Since the metal is going to be hard, do not try to use a high speed for the drill press. A slow speed, around 500 rpm would be best. You'll need a supply of rivets, and wood for handles, if you choose to use wood. Good luck with your endeavors. There are many books on using and shaping metals that should help you.

Nothing beats good ol' soap and water. Rinse it with hot water and let it air dry. Then put a few drops, not much, of oil on the hinges. Vegetable oil or cooking oil will do. And smear a bit over the blades and tools. Then simply wipe over with a dry cloth.

Take a class in blacksmithing. This is not something you can learn to do in an hour, and to do it right you will need difficult to find tools and someone to guide you through the process.

I know very little having not ever done this myself, but have done research. A good knowledge of welding/blacksmithing is really helpful.....plus the tools they use. I have found that finding information on how to do it is hard....not alot written.

check the local machine shops for old power hacksaw blades that they may throw away. The steel is so hard that they have to be ground down on a grinder to shape, they will actually ruin a file or rasp.

homemade knives, aka "shivs" - what have you got up your sleeve? I'm pretty sure they showed how to make one on the prison show "OZ" - felons are great at sharpening plastic sporks and such.
