It's the clock speed of the processor. Generally the faster the clock speed, the faster the computer. Not always the case, since a lot of speed is dependent on the bus speed when accessing RAM and other devices on the bus.

Is 30 mph on a 10 speed the same as 30 mph on a moped?
speed is speed
no real difference between the two besides the obvious differences between the two companies 2.4GHz is fine for a laptop but make sure you have a good amount of RAM 512MB should do the job
the processor depends on the socket in the motherboard
suppose the motherboard supports 774 PCU's then only a 774 will fit (774 is a made up number just as an example)

the intel core 2 duo's are the best chips for laptops, they have tons of power and use less power than many other processors of equal speeds. AMD's are worse than intels for laptops. they run hotter, which uses more power and reduces the life of the part. AMD x2 is a good desktop processor though.
laptops can be faster than desktops, they are about the same though. it used to be that laptops were slow because a slower processor uses less power which is important if your on a batter.
i wouldnt want to buy and additional processor and put it in because it is more expensive in general.

yes 2.4 is the same as 2.4 intel , they are the same thing but not an amd
more speed more power and heat and less battery life generaly speaking you cant upgrade processors in a lap top unless the motherbaord allows that upgrade, even then you may have to change jumpers.
