To factor, look for two numbers which multiply to give 4 and add to 5.

Only possibilities are 1*4 and 2*2, obviously 1*4 is the pair you want, so it's

y = (x+1)(x+4).

The graph crosses the x axis where y = 0, so that gives us two places: where x+1 = 0 and so x = -1, and where x+4 = 0 and so x = -4.

Because the x^2 term has a positive coefficient (it's +1), the graph is concave upwards. (some people call it "smiley"). Its lowest point is halfway between -4 and -1, that is at
x = -2.5

Sub x = -2.5 and find y = -2.25.

Mark these three points (-4,0) (-2.5, -2.25) (-1,0) and draw a smooth parabola through them.

For good measure, notice that when x = 0 y =4, so make it cross the y axis at (0,4)

So you know you have 2 expressions (x+ )(x + ) the signs are both positive so you need two factors that multiply to give you 4 and that add up to 5 (4*1 =4, and 4+1 =5) so the factors become (x+4)(x+1) and your solutions are -4, -1

Math major right here.... You cant sparkling up this question as you've it written. are you searching for the zeros of the equation? if so then using the quadratic equation you get (x-4)(x-a million)=0 and then x is 4 or a million..........................
