I sail, just for fun, at a club. I volunteer, and I tried to get my S6, which is high level racing. This guy I sailed seemed to always be rubbing it in my face that he was better than me. He got his S6 and I didn't. He seemed kind of smug about it. I know that guys get intimidated by girls, but it's just for fun, and why can't he just treat me like a teammate, not like some girl he has to beat out of pride. How should I approach him when I go back to try to get my S6 again next summer?

Uhm.. LOL? ... anywhooo... *giggles uncontrollably* .. intimidated.. the fact that you said the kid sails... answers your question without needing to explain anything.. and the fact that he thinks hes the sh*t because hes el numbero uno at sailing makes me think he's even more of a do**che ... have you ever thought.. maybe he treats you wierd is because hes a do**che?... just push him into the water and tell him he needs to go to the gym... that'll make him feel like total crap and will make him learn his place... when a guy is told by a girl that he needs to work out... that's the worst diss everrrrrrrRRRR...! cuz then you know your pathetic!

It can be annoying to guys when a girl is better than them at a sport for sure. I get irritated too when a girl is better than me at sports, but I don't hold it against the girl and I certainly don't rub it in her face when I do something better. Some guys are just asses and are insecure and constantly have to let everyone know that they are better than them. He might act exactly the same way towards other guys.
Just call him out on his childish behavior next time and tell him he's taking all the fun out of it.
Unfortunately the sport of sailing tends to attract some of the biggest egomaniacs around. I also hate all the hierarchy and stuff that comes along with it. I think it comes from the heavy British influence in sailing ...too bad really, it would be a nice sport without all that negativity.

I don't think they're intimidated as much as their egos get bruised because men aren't supposed to be worse at anything than women. I know that there are plenty of women who are better at sports than I am and not only am I not intimidated nor is my ego bruised, I respect them greatly for their talent and dedication to their sport.

He's trying to get your goat. Don't let your goats out to be got. Like the first answer, he'd say that to another fella, as well. It's not about you, it's about that particular fella, he's just a little in too himself too much. Shrinks would say he's too caught up in himself, and likely, pretty insecure. He gloats like a goat. Now sail away and get that Americas' cup some day! :)

Seems to me that the guy you are referring to might be overly competitve and a little too macho.
If I were you I believe I would tell him that learning isn't a competion.
I don't have a problem losing to a girl.

Yeah, we're real f*ckin' intimidated. *snicker* We're naturally competitive. He would talk the same trash to a man.

Just be nice as always. You have more class than he does. That's enough, right? You never know, he may regret his actions and ask you out.
