What are the academic requirements to become a music critic?

There aren't any--if you can write, if you know about music and have that passion, that is all an editor cares about. You don't need a college degree if you can write.

No formal, across-the-board requirements, but I would imagine most magazines, newspapers, etc. expect English and writing skill. Whether they call for an actual degree varies. I have a friend who writes professionally without a degree in anything.
