Every unit of measure has to have a standard basis. For atomic mass, the AMU (Atomic Mass Unit) is standardized as 1/12 of the Isotope Carbon - 12.

Atomic masses are measured as Daltons

Carbon 12 has that name because it weighs 12 daltons.

Therefore 1é12th mass of carbon is 1 dalton (= hydrogen)
