With Freesat from SKY the smart-card gives access to some services that are 'free' but as yet are still encrypted (as the TV companies involved are still under contract with SKY as pay to view services).
You can get non-SKY sat boxes (Lidl for one sell a box and dish set on a regular basis), which will allow you to view all the unencrypted channels, almost FreeView on satellite.

with some free view boxs there are several good channels not all of them have porno or just shopping channels on them.I would suggest investing in a sky system if you can afford it the sky packages are quite cheap (from £10 upwards per month)The free channels are definately worth watching and alot of new programs will be airing this year such as Blade the series and other new programs aswell...
hope this answers your question.

Depends on what you mean by free. You pay for a package filled with a variety of different channels. Every satellite service offers shoppings channels, sports, etc. If you are talking about the free preview channels, then they are only good for suggestions on what to watch. I have DirectTV and alot of times they run free HBO/Showtime/STARZ weekends. You can load up on free movies if you want to TiVo them to watch later. I find that the premium channels have alot of older movies on them and unless you are keeping up with a series, they are not worth paying for. Personally, I find that DirectTV has more to offer as far as programming goes. I have had other satellite programs but this is the one I recommend. Try browsing each satellite website to see which one offers more of the programs you would like to watch. If you do not have a TiVo/DVR, I highly recommend it.

I assume you are in the UK?
See http://sam-radford.me.uk/ftv.htm for a list of channels available without Sky subscription from Astra-2. Bear in mind that signals from lots of other satellites can be received in the UK. There are thousands of (mostly) non-English language channels. Some play American movies with non-English subtitles.

Depends on what you like. Most of it is mindless shopping channels, but some of the freebies are okay. Better than nothing.
