here in atlantic Canada, the most snow we've gotten so far was last week and it was 15cm... i love the winter... the temperature has barely dropped below freezing which makes outdoor rinks impossible :(
It sucks!!!

It's ironic because I live in Maine and, in the winter, the worst news we can get is to find out our weather pattern will be flowing down from Canada.
But this year, that's been good news!
Hardly any snow so far and temps generally above freezing - keep it coming, my good neighbor!
Note: Heating oil is $3.00 a gallon around here - I may miss the snow and ice, but I damned sure appreciate the higher temperatures more.

Well, we've had an el nino working its havoc with the weather this year for a start. Climate change is also a cause. Some people laugh at this but in the North we can see the change quite drastically creating change There is definite evidence that over the past decade or so the ice pack in the arctic has melted to a great degree. Just this year a giant glassier on Baffin Island, more than the size of Manhattan, broke away and is now floating freely in the Arctic waters. The west coast of Canada has had the worst winter ever with so much rain that the drinking water has been affected and for weeks the was a boil water advisory. They have also had colder temperates bringing with it snow and freezing rain. Until now the prairies have had a lot of mild weather so much so that our rivers didn't freeze properly until now. In central Canada the weather has been strange with Toronto getting its share of snow finally, and the Rediu Canal has not frozen over at all and it is supposed to be our largest skating rink. Out east the snows came late and golfers were actually playing on green grass.

I answered a question like this a couple of times so I'll give you the same answer:

This is the effect of global warming which is caused by the burning of fossil fuels such as gas and coal and the clearing of trees. Clearing trees increases carbon dioxide levels and scientists believe carbon dioxide levels will double before 2050 to 750 parts per million.

And no, strictly it shouldn't happen but there are too many pollutants in this world. Some people however believe this is a natural process for us to get crazy weather which will eventually turn back to normal.

In fact, January 2006 was the hottest January on record in Toronto. I however believe this is nothing to freak about and some people *cough* tree-huggers *cough* are too concerned over this issue. One thing is certain however, don't expect too many white Christmases from now on.
