Vague references to Chomsky won't do, unless you can actually define "soft" and "hard" power.

The U.S. is unpopular for a great many reasons, but usually it is due to flawed foreign policy and failed attempts to institute Americanized democratic republics. That we have managed to excel and surpass all of the other nations with industrial and later technological might has only added to their despising us. We have the money and we always insist on attaching strings to it. People want and believe it's their God given right to get something for nothing.

We have a certain air of supremacy that is offensive to most people in the world as we are offended by most people in our own lives.

But at the same time, Islamic fundamentalists for example are very rigid and anything that doesn't fit into their schema is automatically something to denounce.

I think the situation is a combination of things. Not to say either one is better than the other.

Well, the media makes us appear unpopular, I don't buy it. allot of countries do Love us. And the ones who don't are being brainwashed by their media. We are envied by most for what our fore fathers built. We are proud people and sometimes we don't take the time to see what we have here. I think that when other countries see our citizens and politicians, complaining about how bad we have it here, they get mad because we have it so good. Americans need to appriciate what they've been dealt in life.

i agree with a previous comment that the US isn't as unpopular as some people would like everyone to believe. most of the world embraces our culture and our products like coke, mcd's, etc. look at how the US influences the rest of the world.

i don't care if people from other countries dislike the US. the US is the best country GOD ever gave man.

We weren't unpopular untill Bush took us into Iraq against the wishes of the United Nations. The remedy would be getting out of there when it's safe and not completely ignoring the wishes of the United Nations just because he can ... And just so you all know I am not one of those people that thinks Bush set up the 9/11 attacks and asks things like what will he target next. I just think that the actions leading into Iraq weren't done properly.

We are unpopular because we are successful. People from all walks of life want us to act as they would. We can't be all things to all people and are bound to disappoint.
