With no help forthcoming, the LIBERTY fell an easy victim to Israel's motor torpedo boat attack. FIVE torpedoes were lobbed at the Liberty, one hit amidships and instantly killed 25 sailors. A total of 34 died in the attack, 172 were injured.

The torpedo boats came within 50 feet of the ship, couldn't see the American flag on the mast, couldn't see the words "USS LIBERTY" on the stern, couldn't see "GTR-5" in 6 1/2 foot letters on the bow. The boats shot at American sailors on the deck of the Liberty as the sailors tried to help one another. As life rafts were put in the water by Liberty sailors in preparation for abandoning the ship, the boats shot them up. One boat pulled one out of the water and took it on board. Didn't see the words "U. S. NAVY" stenciled on it. The boats left the scene, apparently when they got erroneous word that the carriers had sent fighters to help the Liberty.

If being in violation of UN sanctions is a key Bush reasoning behind the legality of starting pre-emptive wars then we are in the wrong country.

I've alway wondered why our Government is so polite and willing to back the Israeli's. And then I followed the money.

This ugly myth gets on to Yahoo Answers from time to time. If you read the back answers you would not waste your time and hours with this stuff.

During the Six Day War in 1967, the USS Liberty was sailing in Israeli territorial waters and was UNMARKED.

It refused to identify itself to the Israelis They considered that this ship might be a warship belonging to the armed forces of one to the countries at which it was at war. So, not knowing that this was an American ship, the Israelis attacked it. Right after the attack, the Liberty identified itself, but by then it was late. The Israelis offered all possible help in treating the injured, and they even compensated the families of those who were unfortunately killed and wounded.

This was a very sad story in the relations between the two allies, the United States and Israel.

But the attack was in error, the ship was not marked and refused to identify itself, and the Americans understood and accepted the Israeli apology and compensation.

To claim anything else is just to stir up animosity and to falsify the facts.

And that is a plot to cover up the dastardly terror being waged around the world by radical Islamic terror groups, like Al Qaeda, Hamas, Hisb'Allah and El Aqsa Brigades.

Well, let's assume for a moment that the Israeli pilots were completely briefed on the vessel and knew it was American:

Tell me, what possible benefit could there have been in Israel intentionally attacking its staunchest ally?

By this point, the U.S. had become the largest arms supplier to the nation of Israel, besieged by attacks from its Arab neighbors. Do you actually think that Israel would have deliberately attacked its chief source of defense?

You can ask for compensation, and you can label it an accident or a blunder, but the term "terrorism" does not apply.

What defines terrorism? Israel is an ally so we wouldn't want to label them under "terrorist" because that would imply they are our enemy. Probably not good for foreign policy.

You stupid muslims may not know how to read english but the israeli's are not as dumb as you. You terrorist always hide behind the civilians and attack innocent people. If you terrorist could wear a uniform and go to war like gentlemen, not like a coward hiding behind civilians, I will gladly become one of you. Dont try to blame the israelis for your stupidity. You people are stupid no matter what. If you are against the westeners please get off the internet because it is a western invention. Go back to middle east and sell salt and ride camels and drink camel's urine like you people used to the last 2000 years

What part of "accident" do you not understand? We forgot to tell Israel that we had that ship there. Israel therefore assumed it wasn't ours.
