There are two reasons why it has been taken off the shelves. The studios halted production on the DVD because they will be releasing the 3-D version on DVD sometime in the next year. Also, I just read that Tim Burton is in the process of actually filming and creating a sequel to the Nightmare Before Christmas. If you are really hard up for a copy of the movie, people are selling them on eBay, but I have to warn you, they go for quite a premium now. Good luck.

Ok, now the real story:

Both the1997 (original) and 2000 (special edition) dvds have been discontinued by Disney due to the October 2006 release of the 3-D version to selected theaters. Disney will re-release the 3-D film again next year and more theaters will have been upgraded to show it, allowing more money to be made by Disney.

So far it has been an unverified rumor that the 3-D version will come out on dvd. The 3-D used isn't the anaglyphic red/blue system, it is called a Polaroid double interlock 3-D system. Current TVs cannot handle the technology, however Polaroid 3-D compatible TVs are in the works and may be available to the general public in 5-10 years. Figure them to be quite expensive.

Meanwhile, the older dvd versions pop up from time to time at used dvd stores. I just saw 3 used spec editions at a store by my house selling for $29.99 each, while another store down the road has it for $10.99. Knowing this I wouldn't pay over $30 on ebay or amazon to any of those outrageous price hackers for them.

Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
DVD Details: The Nightmare Before Christmas is being re-released in select theaters for Halloween 2000, and is available on a great new DVD with bonus footage, commentary by director Henry Selick, a "making of" documentary, artwork and designs, and two early Burton shorts, Vincent (1982) and Frankenweenie (1984).

So once again Hollywood is finding new ways to recycle their old crap, and I guess this 3D re-release thing really is turning out to be the next big thing. Here’s another title to add to the list of films being digitally remastered and given the 3D treatment. The 1993 Tim Burton/Henry Selick stop motion animated cult classic The Nightmare Before Christmas is being updated using the same 3D technology Disney used for Chicken Little last year. (That movie was in 3D?) It will be re-released in theatres on October 20th… just in time for Halloween! You know, I can understand doing huge movies like Star Wars and Titanic in 3D, but are there really enough hardcore Tim Burton fans left in the world to make this a profitable venture?

the DVD was actually already re-released in 2000, no word on whether Disney will re-re-release the new 3D version of it or not.
