Call your local county extension office - they may have some suggestions for you. We had a similar problem a couple of years ago... we covered over the openings in our soffit with some very strong wire mesh. We left the edges rough and sticking out as well. Not very attractive - but it did the job! We put the mesh up in the middle of the day so that the squirrels would be gone foraging. Squirrels have a very fast metabolism and would not live long if trapped in your attic - but the smell would be horrendous! (Not to mention the flies, etc.) Sadly - I know from experience! I will admit, also, that I poisoned the little rodents as well. The day before closing up the hole, we put some rat poison pellets in some peanut butter on plastic spoons and tossed them up into the opening. The poison didn't activate in their bodies until they drank water the next day - so they didn't die in my attic. I know that there is a smelly, gooey substance you can place in areas where you don't want birds nesting. We used it at some of the apartment communities I managed. Perhaps there is something similar for squirrels.

Use the same method people use to keep squirrels off the bird feeder. They install upside down funnel shaped metal form. No squirrels can traverse the underside of an inverted cone to reach the center cord that holds the feeder. Likewise install these inverted funnels on all your exhaust pipes on the roof and vents. I would make the funnel with radius of at least 10 inches. For the vent holes under the eaves, install metal screen. The whole idea is to make all openings on your roof and upper sides of your house armed with a down slope path for the critters. Unless they can grab the cone material, gravity will win every time and they'll fall off. Also did you know that mice can climb the vertical side of a house and get in through any small openings in your roof and vent holes.

some strange answers here!
1st thing ya have to do is eliminate the way the squirrels are getting on the roof. cut back all tree limbs and branches to where they're at least 7 ft away from the edge of the roof, also, cut down any limbs/branchs growing over the roof, trim down tall bushes also. then you can go through the steps of sealin off the entry holes. if your as perturbed with the little fluffytailed tree rats as i am, i recommend a crosman monte carlo pump up air rifle w/ a properly sighted in non dot emitting laser site. rifle and scope should cost ya about $50.00

You are on the right track, get rid of the squirrels. Try different baits, like corn or peanut butter. The problem is, of course, that getting rid of the current ones only makes room for the next ones. You might look at the environment around your home to see what is encouraging them to move in.
Also your local extension service might be able to assist you. That is what you are paying them for.

I would contact an exterminator and ask them WHY they are coming into your home. I'm sure they can suggest something for you.

You may need to hire someone to come and put a screened cap on your chimney and air vents.
