The amount and kind of filters you use depends on how much work you want to do. The cheaper the filter the more work you have to do. It is good to have at least two filters that are capable of running the tank individually to cover the eventual failure or crash. Trickle filters are relatively inexpensive but they are Nitrate factories. Protein skimmers don't have the Nitrate problem, but they are fairly costly initially, but the upkeep is fairly easy and inexpensive. Lots of choices(many more than I have mentioned).Find a current book,(published the last few years) and do some money saving research. Don't ask people that have things to sell, they all will have the best and only answers. Good luck, and have fun.PeeTee.----- oh yeah, one more thing, the live rock would help with the initial cycling of the tank,so you might want to consider using some for start-up.

I would recommend you to buy a cannister filter something in the range of EHEIM Professionel II 2028, Eheim is expensive but there are many with the same capabilities (jebao, Atman, etc) but at a lower cost.

Get a skimmer too. Even cheap skimmer is better than not having any at all.

I would definitely get what is called a wet dry or trickle filter especially for that size tank, one that is rated for 100 gallons. It would go in the cabinet below your tank. There is a website where I buy some equipment called www.drsfosterandsmith.com where they tell you about all the filters and how they work. It's a good place to learn about them and get some general price ideas.

Powerheads, a good skimmer and water changes. LR is the best in the business. You should consider some. Otherwise use plants(macroalgea).

Don't skimp amd just go buy a Fluval filtration system, they're not as expensive as they used to be and they work great with minimun maintenance.
