How long did it take to pen the Constitution of the US?

Several years. It wasn't the smooth copy we all know and love today, there were many rough drafts and lots of ink. Lots of bickering over what was to be included and what was to be excluded.

I'm not sure exactly how long it took to write out, but it was worked on for almost exactly a year, from September 1786-September 17, 1787.
