How cool is this school? Does it really feel like you're still in the 60's at this school? Many hippies and a free spirit way of life?

Humboldt State is a good but not great school. In California, there are three tiers of public colleges -- the UC's (Berkeley, UCLA etc.), the Cal States (which includes Humboldt) and the community colleges.
You will get a decent practical education at Humboldt.
If you look through their catalog, you will find that the courses have a "hippie feel" to them. For instance, the political science department requires grads to have a course in Environmental Politics. My college (another Cal State) didn't even have a course in Environmental Politics as an elective.
Pot is definately "in" It's also a very politically active and aware campus. (Left leaning, definately).
If this fits you, you will enjoy it a lot. If you're a George W. Bush fan, you might not be real popular.
