Kenneth, with no real offense, I've not enjoyed many of your questions, though I don't strictly judge you.
This one, and likely the one you relate here, are Valid however.
Certainly one can accumulate "things" and many times those THINGS also are part of an acquistion of, or insist after the fact,,,MEMORIES.
I'm a pack rat. I tend to gather, and often find that I've overloaded my life with useless THINGS,,,BUT knowledge, memories, FEELINGS are also "THINGS" our species accumulates. Very often we attempt "house cleaning" but the mind is so much better at hunting, gathering, and organized filing, than the balance of what makes up our species.
That said, and related to what I mentioned above, I offer this abstract example. As a child I had a stuffed animal as so many others do. For whatever reasons, I accepted it, held to it, yet at some point, likely discarded it, while KEEPING, many of the THINGS it meant to me.

The gathering and hording of things can give us a fleeting sense of security. Some people validate themselves with the accumulation of things. Some of us lose the sense of who we raeally are when we work so hard to get things that we think we need. Once we get those things we wonder why we aren't happy or what do we need next.
I have personally learned that things don't buy happiness- I also know that my things......non fancy as they might be....are part of who I am. They say I am artistic and funkey. I don't need trendy expensive things. I can take a goodwill table and make it look good. Most of my furnature have had many lives and are retireing with me. My collection of quilts make me feel wrapped in memories. I am proud of my own art on my walls. I sometimes wonder if my pride of not haveing much or my having the unordinary is just MY way of accumulation things that validate me in my uniqueness.. Maybe the collection of objects Are truely a reflection of who we are.

I have accumulated knowledge, and memories, and successes time and time again in my life. On the other hand, I haven't accumulated many objects or money..
My grandfather told me about three months before he died that he wished he had learned sooner that money has no value when you're lying in your coffin. The only thing you can take with you are the memories that you helped create, and the knowledge that you passed on to your own children, and they to theirs, and so forth.
The reason most people think about accumulation in their life as being objects is because that's their focus in life. Not trying to be judgemental, but I am constantly surrounded by people who think they are better because they have the nice car, house, job, clothes, etc, but don't have the personality or heart to go with it........It is something that we are all taught.. if you have nice objects, people will like you, be attracted to you, love you, etc.. when all in all the only person you're hurting is yourself, by covering yourself up with material possesions, rather than opening yourself up to your own inner beauty.

I think that it is the way we think now. It has become a world of "who has more" in terms of things I can hold or things I can buy.
I think that there is one thing we accumulate, whether we want to or not, whether we choose to accept it or not, and will continue to accumulate until our lives perish. You know what that is? Age. That's the only sure-fire accumulation in this lifetime.

Oh, yeah, I've accummulated lots of memories and bits of trivia. So much so that it comes spilling out every time someone pushes my trivia button. Of course, it goes right back in once I've spoken it because I've heard it again.
I think I need a pensive. Sometimes I'm not sure what books I've read and what I've plotted myself. And I doubt I'll ever remember what I was thinking when I wrote "a man, two boys, and a donkey's tail." Bugs the heck out of me, but that's ALL there is.

Well, Kenny Boy, I've accumulated a truck load of knowledge and the wisdom that comes from it but you can't retire and live on wisdom. BTW, didn't you croak?

Knowledge and memories are the only things that really are yours. Anything else can be lost, taken or worn out.
