Additional details...

I have an old comforter but noticed some down-filled quilts and comforters on sale at various local/regional stores.

Just wondering if I should continue with a comforter or switch to a quilt as winter in the New England area is downright chilly!

Thanks again for the replies.

Quilts are used as cover for a bed when it is cold or cool. People come form the days when there were no fuzzy immitation blankets.
It's basically used just like a blanket or comforter.
Most comforters are just soemthing you used to cover up with temporary like when sitting in a easy chair or on the couch.
People are now using comforters instead of bed spreads as they can now be brought in bed sizes. Bed spreads were for a top covering on beds usually when no wone was sleeping on the bed. The bed spread was used for looks and used to be the best looking part of any bedroom usually with fancy designs.
Most quilts are home made of different colors of cloth. My mother , mother in law, and grand mothers made them from old dresses, shirts, and material purchased from sears for just that use.
Designs like stars, flowers or squares were cut out of a seperate material and sewed together stitch at a time until an entire liner(top or bottom was made.
A good quilt could take from a week to several weeks hung up on quilting frames in a spare room or the living room so she could watch tv or listen to the radio while working.

I have many quilts made by my grandmother, and I have used them like comforters. If you have a multi colored quilt just put it on top of your sheet, and you can buy pillow's to match the color pattern of your quilt. Some quilts have one layer of cloth, and some two to three. Mine has two to three. The more layers they have the heavier they are, and warmer. You can fold it over or cover your whole bed. Some quilts don't cover your whole bed just the top and is very short on the sides. A quilt will not hang on your bed like a comforter does unless you have one that is larger than your bed. It can be used as a blanket also. If it is heavy? I would use it on the style of a comforter. If the quilt is thin, I would use it over my blanket, and decorate around it accordingly.

It can be used either way or as a bedspread, depending on the thickness of the batting and the materials used. Some quilts with heavy batting and inexpensive materials are purely utilitarian and are meant to be used like blankets or comforters. Others, with thinner batting and expensive materials like silk, are more decorative.

Nowdays, most storebought quilts are made in places like China and are suitable for use as either a blanket or a comforter.

do you use a blanket in a different way from a comforter? Does it matter which one is on top? Is that what you're getting at? Yeah, put the quilt on top......if it's really cold, put the comforter on top of that!

I have to have sheets and a comforter on my bed. Unless it's just a nap then I'm on top of the covers with a light blanket over me.

For Decoration mostly, we only put ours out on special occasions with a sheet under them definitly, not for used for warmth though because usually quilts are not that thick.

if its a really nice hand quilted old quilt, use it as decoration...otherwise use it as a blanket or comforter.
