Hit Ctrl-A on the desktop. This will select everything on the desktop. Hit delete after and there you go. There are some icons you won't be able to delete (Recycle bin for example) but otherwise, you can delete everything.

In addition to cntrl+A then delete, you will need to right click on the desktop, select properties, goto the desktop tab, then click on customise.
There you can uncheck the My Documents, My Computer, My Network Places, and Internet Explorer Icons that you cannot delete.
There is also a desktop cleanup wizard that you can setup to run periodically that will remove unused items.
Good Luck !

Highlight the first one you want to delete, go to the last one you want to delete, press and hold the shift key, and click on it, then right click on any one of those selected, and then click Delete, when the popup window comes up. Then, select Yes, or okay, when the option comes up. Voila, you're done.
Just make sure you're deleting the ones ya want to really delete..

delete them permanently you go to file, control panel, and add/remove programs and it will give you a list. If you just want to delete the shortcut you can just drag the icons into the recycle bin, but that doesnt delete the program
