After WWII nationalism coincided with the glorification of government types (i.e. capitalism vs. Communism). Countries lined up on both sides, and their flags became symbols of one government style over another. So, the Cold War was somewhat of a product of nationalism.

Nationalism also was prevalent in the Jewish quest for statehood--the issue of Israel that still cuts to the bone in today's world. The Jews and modern day Palestinians both were promised their own states, but the Palestinians were eventually denied.

German nationalism was the most prominent, although Italian nationalism also contributed as well. Both of these states were fascist militarist states that demanded nationalism and expansionism.
