"Alien" means stranger, or one not belonging. So an alien person does not belong- meaning, is not a legal, natural or accepted as a resident.
"Illegal alien" means non-citizen who has entered the country without permission.
An immigrant is someone who has applied for permission to enter a country and live, work or attend school there.
Illegal aliens are not immigrants: they may come, but they have not asked permission, gone through the proper channels or attained proper documentation. If discovered, they can be imprisoned and held until a court hearing officially expels them.
An immigrant can have his/her status revoked, but has more rights in the appeals process, and will not be imprisoned for the most part.
That make more sense? You may not like the term, but that is how it was coined, and why.
