Possibly the fight of religion vs. science. That's my best guess. Maybe it means that the people we believe are angelic are not always that way, but instead are demons. It really is up to the reader to interpret it.

It is simply a way to get the reader into the right mindset. People have washed down the meanings of words over the generations, what something once was meant to convey doesn't have the same connotations. Picture the idea of evil. If something good is done in the name of evil is it still good? And vise versa.

I've not read the piece, nor will I likely, but I know how I interpret the pharse.

Within each of us exists both, and very likely they battle lifelong, in our substance and psychie, for control, and occasionally one or the other relent, and allow the opposite to have a level of control for awhile.

the book is about crimes against the church ((angels or good spirits)) by evil doers of an ancient cult ((demons or evil spirits)) the way the main evil doer kills the pope and other bishops is very gruesome and in a demonic manner//symbolism ((ack!!))

it is the book before the davinchi code. it helps u to understand the main carachter more but other than that it aint esintial to read it before u read davinchi code.
