It's partly a great song because the story behind it is really touching. When John Lennon was living with Yoko Ono, and about to divorce Cynthia Powell, Paul McCartney took it upon himself to try and cheer up their son, Julian. "Take a sad song and make it better," was McCartney's way of telling Julian to make the best of a bad situation, and the song, in fact, was originally, "Hey, Jules". But apparently he liked the song so much, he composed the rest of it (ultimately changing the name to Jude, simply because it was easier to sing).

But, the story isn't everything, of course...people don't KNOW the story. The Beatles could do no wrong, and every song was as likely as the next to become a chart topper. "Hey, Jude" is still their most frequently aired, commercially successful piece of music...but if THAT'S what the question is about, I really couldn't tell you.

Its all about the presentation and vocals, and the Beatles created that great original, not fake studio edited, sound. The live and strip down version of the song still sound great. Plus the Beatles sang it so its good.

I really don't know what makes it great. I guess the lyrics and the melody, the ending part is a classic,
na na na na na na na na na na na hey Jude.
