WLAN = Wireless Local Area Network
WAN = Wide Area Network
LAN = Local Area Network
A LAN could be as small as 2 computers in your home or as large as 255 computers at some company. A WAN is 2 or more LAN's connected together. The largest WAN is the Internet. A WLAN is simply a LAN with Wireless capability.
You want a LAN in your home? This can be done several ways. Typically, you could set up a LAN or WLAN with file sharing between the computers on the LAN. To set up a LAN or WLAN (with Internet access), you need an Internet connection and a router (wireless router for a WLAN).
You would need either ethernet cable to connect to the router or wireless network adapters to connect wirelessly. To set up the router, you will need at least temperary direct connect to the router.
The cost? $75 for a wireless router, $19 - 40 for internet access (dsl or cable), and $30 for USB Wireless Adapters for each computer you want connected wirelessly.

WLAN is a wide local area network. They do not come as "desk top" verisions. LAN is a company that provides access to the internet, you have to set up connection through a T1 cable, its all very involved and to start one you need about $45,000.00 +/- where you live and if the company supplying the cables to you have enough access lines. The W just means you cover more than the one area.
Search the net on "how to be an isp"
Good Luck.

You could probably get one at almost every large retail store (Target, Radio Shak, Wal-Mart) if you are looking for the wireless card. If you are looking for the router you could get one of these at the same stores. The router would cost anywhere from 40 to 100 dollars. I'm not sure how much the card would cost, but they shouldn't be to expensive (if you go with the right brand). Hope this answer helps!!!!

DSL can be as cheap as $15 per month
Cable is about $60 per month
It will depend on what broadband ISP's serve your location.
