I have a lot of time on my hands and i want to take up a new hobby, i want to begin to play the guitar, but i have a few questions. Is it possible to learn without an instructor or teacher? i mean i would want to just be able to pick it up and learn on my own time. would there be a special book i would have to use that would help me to learn? i haven't been really into playing instruments so im starting from scratch thanks, i found an instrument that i think suits me, thanks for your answers!

I taught myself how to play as well. the main site i went to is wholenote.com. and its completely free.

that site is so helpful. i still use it even though i'm not a beginner anymore. it has lessons from beginner to extreme advanced skill levels and is easy to navitage through. it also alows you to pick between different styles of guitar you want to learn. its amazing.

my suggestion would be to click on BASICS at the top and click on all of those lessons there and learn them. those are the basics. then go to LESSONS at the top. you can select beginner skill lessons and work from there. just roam around that site and it will be amazingly helpful for you.

first things I learned while teaching myself:

parts of the guitar
tuning
learn how to read tabs (i dont know how to read real music, yet)
major chords
minor chords
strumming
knowing the fretboard (know all the notes on the 6th string from the first fret to the 12th fret. it starts over at the 13th. the 6th string is the thickest string.)

get all of that down and then put together like 4 chords and make a song. just play them over and over again.

transitioning to chords will be tough and your hands will hurt for a month but if you stick with it you will see an improvement. dont give up! good easy transitions are form G to D, G to Dm, D to G, Dm to G, Am to C, C to Am, E to Am, Am to E, and anything to Em is usually pretty easy. some good chords to play in a pattern to practice are.....

Am to C to G to Em
or
G to D to C to Am

those are pretty easy.

try to learn all of that and you'll be playin in no time. is really quite simple and easy once you get the hang of it. stick with it and practice for like 1 hour everyday and you'll get all this down fairly well in a month or two. stick with it. dont give up. and remember, guitar playing is not a chore. it is for fun! think of it that way. it shouldn't be like homework.

so ya, hope this was helpful.

Learning the Guitar You need a course of instruction. The best way is with a private teacher 2nd would be class lessons 3rd regularly get together with other guitar players or if you absolutely will or cannot do the above, Buy a book on how to play the guitar and follow it religiously. Last would be to find some free online lessons and skip around in them doing what YOU think you want to do next. Guitar is one of the world’s most popular instruments. It is easy to take with you. It has a sound that people like. It can be use in almost any type of music. Almost anyone can learn to play it. Simple music is easily played after only a few days or weeks. You can continue to learn new and challenging music forever.

How long it takes to learn guitar depends on how good you want to get and how much practice you put in. How good you can get with 1-2 hours a day for a few months depends on what methods you use to practice. There are effective practice methods that will help you make the best use of your time. This course is one of the best. https://bitly.im/aMCu1 It's not just about how much you play but how effectively you play that will determine how good you will get.

I'm a piano teacher who has just begun teaching guitar. I'm pretty much self-taught on the guitar.

There is a series of books that is great for anyone wanting to learn to play the guitar. I use these books with my students, but it says, right in the front of the book, that you can use them to teach yourself.

The books are called the "Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book" by Will Schmid &Greg Koch. Here's the website http://www.halleonard.com/featureResultsItemDetail.jsp?itemid=699010&order=0&featureCat=450001&li=yes&location=GuitarBass&refer=null

You can't order the books from that site, but any local print music shop should have them, if not, they should be able to order them.

Sure. Go for it! I didn't decide to learn toplay guitar 'till I was in my 40's. And I love it. You can learn alot of basics from some of the tab sites. They have beginner lessons on some of them too. I found it was easier to "play" things on the accoustic first instead of the electric. But to each his own. Here's a couple of sites that I used:

ultimateguitar.com

tabs4acoustic.com

Possible, yes, many good guitarists have taught themselves, but you would be at such a higher advantage if you had lessons. Even from a friend who knows a thing or two? As long as you learn to read tabelature. Set yourself weekly goals, so you have something specific to work towards, and so that you stay motivated, especially when trying to teach yourself!

There are books and tapes you can buy that will teach you how to play. Or you can randomly make up your own songs.
