As a former boy myself, let me give you a first-hand response.
At this age (usually bout the time puberty sets in) boys tend to be more aggressive due to hormonal surges (testosterone) in preparation of eventual mating. Therefore, boys become very peer aware and tend to "out-do" each other as a form of mating rivalry.
If a boy does something nasty, and he handles it in front of his peers, he views himself as being more "brave" than the others, and therefore more desirable toward females.
As far as the "gross" things that boys do, well, it's just darned fun!
(and for the shock value!)

I have a theory that once the hormones kick in, children become more animal like. Once the hormones stabilize, the young adult begins to act like an adult and most boys start treating girls nicely. However some boys never grow up and some never treat women nicely.

I don't know, but boys in that age group can be the most annoying people in our species. Many of them are rude, say perverted things, are too loud, break things, say dumb remarks and need to just play outside and not bother anyone till they're at least 15.
