Personally I think it is out of compassion for the other person (people). With the act of communicating, you become concerned for the other person's state of being (i.e. are they understanding you?) And the term compassion means "to alleviate the suffering of another creature". Naturally being confused (as opposed to understanding) would be a state of suffering. Even the act of killing seems a form of compassion, as a final and utter communication of will. What do you think?

the way things are going in the world today, i am sad to report it seems that the only reason people communicate is to pick fights, cater to their pride and vanity, con someone out of some money, convict someone of some crime...there isn't much communication involving otherwise...maybe someday...

On the most basic level, I think the things that help us survive--eating, sleeping, having sex, etc--are things we enjoy because the creatures that enjoy them are more likely to reproduce and pass on that trait. Humans are social animals by nature, and our facility with language is one of the most important things in our success as a species.

On the higher levels, communication helps us to feel less alone. It allows us to comfort each other, to work together, and to love and understand one another more. It also helps us to remember things, and to explore and expand ideas.

Communicating is most helpful to both the speaker and listener. We learn by listening and also help others when we care enough to talk. This is our best way of leaning and showing concern for others.

I think it's just instinct. We automatically just do. There's no deep, emotional reason for it.
